Question: why are my clips not embedding? I've put media tags around them but they just come up as links.

Unfortunately, YouTube videos aren't embedding properly anymore like they used to... mostly as the forum software is an older version, I'm afraid. I should upgrade it but I won't go into why I haven't.

I use Firefox as my main browser (v.45 ESR and not the latest as I'm not about to lose many of my extensions whilst Firefox morphs into Chromefox and does away with them... :censored: ) and all I see now is a blank area where there should at least be a link - if the link used is a YouTube.com and not a Youtu.be one. I've tried all sorts with code for the media tags to get it working, but it won't work.

However, if I try in Safari or Opera, the videos are embedded and show fine. So it must be something that's related to Firefox. I don't (won't) use Chrome, so I've no idea how it shows in Chrome, but it should be similar to Opera since Opera is chromium based.

From what I can tell, it seems that:

- links with "https" from youtube.com will embed, in Safari and Opera (and maybe Chrome too) but not in Firefox.

- links with "https" from youtu.be don't embed and instead show as a link.

- links that are older don't have the "s" at the end of "http" and don't seem to embed in Firefox either.

- links that are older with or without the "s" in "hittp" but with "m" (for "mobile") in them, show as a link too.

- it might also depend on if there's something after the string of letters at the end of the url.

So, in a nutshell:

- if you use the link from the address bar - which should be a youtube.com one - it'll show blank in at least Firefox but might show as embedded in other browsers.

- if you use the link from the "share" feature - which should be a youtu.be one - it won't embed but will show as a link in all browsers.

Clear as mud, eh? :stars:

something to do with privacy on youtube

I don't think it is related to privacy. In Firefox, I block cookies on all sites except those I choose to whitelist. I use uBlock as an adblocker. I tested it by allowing YouTube cookies and disabling uBlock, and they still don't show for me (in Firefox). In Safari, I only allow cookies from sites I visit and the videos were embedded even with my adblocker enabled. Ditto Opera.

Thanks Marina. It's not really a big deal, just took me by surprise as I hadn't had the issue anywhere else. Links will do fine.

Talking of which:

That's probably as you used the youtube.com link and not the "shared" youtu.be link (as I explained above) :hoop:. It still doesn't embed for me in Firefox though, but it does embed for me in Safari or Opera.

I stopped using Firefox a while ago, it just became a boated mess! Do mind if I ask why you don't use Chrome?

For me, Firefox has too many extensions (including developer ones) that can't be replaced in other browsers, so I'll stick to an ESR version for as long as I can. It's such a shame Mozilla are taking the route they are with it and being hell-bent on destroying what it was by making it into a chrome-clone. I've been using it since it first came out in the early 2000s when it was the first browser to use tabs. It's also far more configurable and "tweakable" than any other browser - currently, at any rate. I also like choosing which toolbar buttons I can use and being able to place them where I want. I have more control over privacy, with extensions for cookies, data storage and so on. Out of all the browsers, FF is still the best for security and privacy, even without extensions to help extend privacy. I also find it uses less memory than Chrome or Opera do with just one or two tabs open. I could switch to Pale Moon or SeaMonkey, both forks of FF, but neither of them work with all FF extensions, only some.

I don't use Chrome as I'm one of those anti-Google people :wink2:. I did once have it installed - and hated it anyway - and removed it the minute it silently installed some other Google products on my computer without so much as even asking me if I wanted them; that did it for me and I refuse to have any Google products installed now and try to limit my use of Google to search only.

That's interesting. I'm also on El Capitan and the only Google app i have is Music Player which I downloaded myself (and just deleted as I moved back to an iPhone last year)

I think Google stopped silently installing apps at some stage, possibly due to uproar about them doing it! Nevertheless, I've got a thing about Google and privacy, so I still avoid anything Google on my computer

Also, Firefox gives me the option to choose whether to download the latest version. I hate apps that (silently and) automatically update themselves, I prefer to first check if there are any problems with updates and then I'll manually update them myself when it's convenient to me and not right in the middle of something I might be reading or working on.

I know we've gone a bit off-topic here, and I don't know if it still applies although I suspect it does, but here are a couple of old links about Google's software updater (for Mac):

Thanks Marina. I'm not going to pretend to understand most of that as it really isn't my area of expertise.

Apologies for taking the thread off topic, allow me to rectify it for you

I've seen The Mission live a good few times over the years. I remember fondly seeing them at The Borderline, it was a fan club gig, so the capacity was under 300 if my memory serves me correctly, it was about 25 years ago tho
