Hi HCT,

I know it's not an easy or pleasant conversation to have but I'd suggest a chat with either your GP or MS Nurse to see if there's a continence service that you can be referred to.

When I was first diagnosed and living down South one of my symptoms was increased frequency - simply put I was running to the loo an awful lot and then needing to go again about 5 minutes after I'd been. Anyway, I'll get to the point, my MS Nurse at the time actually had a joint clinic with a continence nurse so they booked me in, assessed me, and gave me magic pills.

Since moving to Scotland I haven't seen a continence nurse as my clinic here don't operate the same set up but I'm sure my MS Nurse mentioned that they could refer me if needs be.

It may also be something that you can self-refer to - have a search on your health board's website and you might find some info.

I do remember from my experiences at the clinic that it was nowhere near as excruciatingly embarrassing as I was worried it would be. More interesting was my mother kindly telling people how awful it was that I was, at the tender age of 29, incontinent as she assumed I must be to attend such a clinic - I soon put her straight too :lolbash:

Take care xx

Incontinence issues can be addressed in one way or another.

Continence Services can advise you on how to manage the existing problems and how you can make the situation a bit easier. I was working through this approach. I was trying the medications, but they weren't terrifically successful with me.

Eventually, i got my GP to refer me to Urology. They ran some tests to understand what was working and what wasn't, i.e. they performed an MOT on my plumbing. Eventually, we started talking about treatment options.

Botox was suggested for me.

This has been very successful in my eyes (well, in the bladder actually! :what: ). I no longer have urgency and I no longer have "those" accidents. And, I can sleep through the night - I had been getting up about 5 - 6 times on occasions!

OK, catheterising is now a necessary part of my life, but I was an Intermittent Self Catheter-iser anyway.

I feel that a part of my life has been restored. So, see if Urology can help you.

    • iv steroids and bladder prob

Hello again folks I had a dose of steroids on Monday and began to feel a bit rotten yesterday. My bladder in particular was causing me trouble, up and down to the loo constantly.   This continued through the night, i was needing to pee all the time and i did actually go, it wasn't just the feeling of needing to go.   Has this got something to do with the steroids? I also had headache all the on Wednesday which is unlike me but its my bladder causing me the most trouble. I also started on tolterodine a week ago.

    • Bladder research trial in north London

If you have an overactive bladder (OAB) with your MS, you may be interested in a research trial at the Whittington Hospital in north London. In some people with OAB symptoms, the urine shows signs that the bladder is inflamed, and although infection is a recognised cause of such inflammation, routine tests for infection are often negative. Some research has raised doubts about the accuracy of standard tests for infection.   More details are shown on the attached pdf file.
