Tapatalk Removal

Hi,

In reference to the Tapatalk removal, the mobile version is nowhere near as usable as the Tapatalk version.

But the full version, even on a phone, is better then Tapatalk.

So I guess it is a reasonable move.

I am an occasional Tapatalk user but not enough to be too put out by its demise from the forum.

It is the only forum I use it for, so I can remove it now.

I object to the direction they have gone in anyway.

My thoughts, for what they are worth.

Paul

Sometime later this year, there will be another huge upgrade to the forum. That upgrade will bring with it a much improved mobile version as, basically, there will be no more mobile version as such but the whole forum will be what's known as "responsive" in that it will shrink and change layout to apply to the type of device being used. It will be a bit of a wait for it though, I'm afraid...

Re Tapatalk, I'm inclined to agree with all your comments, Paul :hippy:

the mobile version is nowhere near as usable as the Tapatalk version.

There are instances where that might be true, which might also depend on which version of Tapatalk (since there are 3 incl the HD one for iPad).

But just in case anyone's missed it, as it's easy to not realise what it does, there's a little square icon at the top right of every page of the mobile version. Clicking on it will open options to click on for various features that Tapatalk doesn't include such as status updates:

i suspect i was trying an older version of the mobile site.

There certainly things it couldn't do that Tapatalk could but I can't remember what now. i blame the MS, my mind has gone to much.

But on a tablet the full site is not problem and it is manageable on a decent sized mobile, a Nexus 4 in my case.

I may give the mobile site another run out.

Tapatalk can go now for me.

it could well be.

I tend to get stuck in my ways, if something doesn't do what I want, i don't often go back to it.

You only get once chance with me. lol.

But I'll break a habit and check it out again.

Got it.

You can now see status's but you can't see comments or add comments.

You can't change moods either.

Trivial stuff I know but I knew there was a reason i had it set to fetch full version.

Tapatalk can't do either of these to. I am seeing no great reason for its continued existence.

It stopped working with the society forum when they did a major forum upgrade a few years ago now.

That's why the option is there to choose between the mobile and full version :hoop:

I seem to think Tapatalk couldn't even show the smilies properly, which at least the IPB mobile theme does.

Basically, the mobile theme is a stripped down version, to enable it to be more suitable for mobiles. But, like I said, a future upgrade will improve on it a lot as it will be the full version but adapted to fit on a mobile screen. Every part of the forum will be available. You'll be able to post using formatting (bold, italic, etc), use smilies and upload attachments.

Crumbs, I've just looked at the MSS forum in both a resized and "responsive" view. It doesn't shrink down at all.

A tip that may or may not help a bit when using the full version on a mobile and viewing topics:

I have a s***t phone!

It is an old nokia which cannot take photos and freaks out if I have more than 15-20 texts. Even so I have not wanted to get anything better as it fulfills what I expect of a phone. I cannot count the number of times I have dropped it on the floor or ground and yet it is still happy to keep on working.

Truth be told, I don't have a smart phone either... I've still got a 10-yr old mobile! Coverage is rubbish in my area, I don't go out much, so I only really carry it for emergencies or the occasional quick call when I go out. I don't even do texts, too blinking fiddly. Otherwise, my landline suits me fine

I do, however, have an iPod Touch, which is like an iPhone without the phone part of it, where I can test what the forum looks like. But since I got my iPad 3 yrs ago, I don't really use the iPod Touch anymore (other than as a music player).

I've never really understood why they are called "smart phones", they can be really stupid at times. the number of times i have sworn at it. bad words too. words I never use normally.

Having said that, I have a Google Nexus 4 and it is has proved to me really very useful. it has replaced my sat nav for a start. It means i can keep my address book up to date on the PC and it appears by magic on the phone. No plugging in no nothing.

The only problem is, its getting so i need a 20" phone to be able to see the screen. Images of Dom Joly spring to mind.
