More details

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological condition which affects around 100,000 people in the UK. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20-40, but it can affect younger and older people too. Roughly three times as many women have MS as men.

What is Sativex?

Sativex is a peppermint-flavoured mouth spray that comes in a small pump that you can carry with you. This pump delivers a precise amount of medicine every time you spray it.

The medicine in Sativex is extracted from cannabis plants that have been selected and grown to produce a constant amount of active ingredients. Sativex is the first cannabis-based medicine to be licensed in the UK.

Sativex is made under strictly controlled laboratory conditions and contains a balance of these active ingredients that have been shown to help improve the symptoms of MS spasticity.

Treatment with Sativex must be initiated and supervised by a physician with specialist expertise in treating MS. http://sativex.co.uk/patients-and-…/sativex/what-is-sativex/

Sativex can be taken in conjunction with other medications and does not negate your current ones

The NHS in Wales is first in the UK to fund a cannabis-based medicine for people with multiple sclerosis. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-28810407

Sativex is also being studied in the UK as an add-on treatment for brain cancer. Previous studies have also suggested benefits in treating arthritis and neuropathic pain.

The petition has 772 signatures. 10,000 needed for government reply and 100,000 needed for debate. Sativex or medicinal cannabis apparently eases spasticity but we can't try it because of the power of pharmaceutical companies, so any attempt to change this has my vote!

I am taking Sativex and after taking it for only a few days I saw a reduction in burning pain, spasms, skin pain and deep pain and after a couple of weeks I was pain free which was great.  I do also have a pump delivering a low dose of Baclofen which was not helping those pains but is still working for other pain.  Because I am very allergic to oral Baclofen and it was no longer helping pains it had previously helped, I wanted to replace it with Sativex.  However while I was taking Baclofen together with Sativex the spasticity was reduced in both my back and legs.  However as soon as I started reducing the Baclofen the spasticity increased noticeably even though I had increased the Sativex to 7 sprays.  I was hoping to find someone who was successfully using Sativex to reduce Spasticity.   THANKS.  TRISH

    • MS Society Petition

I received the following e-mail from the MS Society :-   “Today we’re launching a brand new campaign, MS: Enough.   We’re calling on the UK Government to recognise the reality of living with MS and make welfare make sense – and we need your help.   Welfare support is vital for many people with MS, helping to manage the extra costs of the condition, stay in work for longer and participate fully in society. Yet the current system is not making sense, too often ignoring invisible symptoms like pain and fatigue and failing to recognise how MS can fluctuate.   Shockingly, over a third of people with MS said face to face assessments had caused their MS to relapse or deteriorate. Having MS is enough; it should not be made harder by a welfare system that doesn’t make sense. Please sign our petition to the Minister for Disabled People today.   Together, we can persuade the Government to recognise the reality of living with MS and make welfare make sense. Please click here to make your voice heard.   Thank you for your support.”   The Petition is here:- http://mssociety.cmail20.com/t/r-l-fhdgtd-djtumitdk-o/
