I am thinking of getting one as they are now a reasonable price

BUT

to down load a book they cost just as much as a hardback/paperback book, so what will i actually achieve from buying one?? I thought that the download books where cheaper than the physical book in your hand.

So now not sure if I should waste my money or not ............................

I don't have one, but my brother does. I think certain books are free - mainly the classics, which would suit me. I didn't realize it cost so much to download more modern books either, as I was considering one for myself. I still think I'd prefer the physically having a book to read, but it would make the house a whole less cluttered!! Ours is like a lending library.

We're all avid readers. So with 5 of us the books mount up and no-one likes parting with them. I get most of mine 2nd hand on Amazon, mostly for 1p a time plus p&p, or from charity shops. I thought you could download them cheaply too, so I may not bother with one either. xx.

We have a Kindle and my husband, who reads 3 books a week, thought he wouldn't like it but he loves it now! It's true ebooks are only slightly cheaper than hard copies and you can't hand them on to friends (though you can share ebooks between several kindles). When you're reading in bed you can rest it on your stomach without turning the pages :lolsign: Plus if you want a book you don't need to go out looking or one, you can have it straight away, any time of the day or night. Also, the house isn't cluttered with books. I would love a library but sadly it's not very realistic.

I have an iPad, which you can also download books to. I also have the kindle app on my iPad.

There are tons of books for iPad that are free to download, and, if you have the kindle app and download via kindle, it goes straight to the iPad library.

I though long and hard about buying the iPad. But I'm so very glad I did.

Internet, mail, music, pictures, games, movies, bbc iplayer, and many more free books to choose from, plus kindle books.

Admittedly I was looking to replace my laptop which had given up the will to live and update. But now I have everything I need in one small, thin, light, machine.

My wife uses one. She is an avid reader too. she has hundreds of books on it.

If you are likely to want to hold lots of books then look at the capacity of the new, cheaper kindle. It would be too small for my wife.

Ahh Platos Republic,

The major intent of the debate in the Republic is to determine an extended definition of what constitutes Justice in a given state, whether or not a concept of Justice may be determined by citizens in a given state at the time that Plato is writing, and how Justice may be accomplished in a given state (how laws might be enacted that would serve the citizens of a just state in courts of law). Thus it is that the conversation in the Republic proceeds from a question of meaning (what is Justice?), augmented by questions of fact (are there examples of justice in action or of just men?), to a question of policy (what laws may be effected to ensure the carriage of justice?). Of course if a given state could be founded on a resolution and emulation of such precepts, it would be an ideal state; Plato is generally acknowledged to be an idealistic philosopher.

The argument advanced in this dialogue, then, is an attempt to outline a possible and realistic policy for securing well-being and happy concord (the good life) for the citizens of the state: just citizens dwelling in a just state. The Republic, we are reminded, is translated from a dialogue first written in ancient Greek; perhaps a better translation of its title might be the State, or the Ideal State.

As Plato advances the argument in this dialogue, he sees that he will have to incorporate questions having to do with the education of the ideal citizens; questions having to do with the place of the fictive arts (music, poetry, drama, and so on) in his ideal state, and the philosophies and metaphysics (true knowledge) from which these things ensue."

Then again I might be talking bollocks
