If you think there's a connection between your glandular fever and MS: reply and describe what makes you think this.

No off-topic replies.

I was never "healthy" again after the glandular fever when I was 17, suffering one different chronic long-term condition after another.

I was DX'd in 2005, which would put me at the "20+" years after level.

After having the Glandular Fever (quite severely) at 18 my Dad is adamant that I never regained my energy levels to how I was prior to having it. He was right and a while ago (previous to this vote) I have talked about it in topics as I definately do believe my MS stemmed from Glandular Fever although I wasn't diagnosed for many years later. I had several severe Gynae conditions (non sexual ones I must add!) in my 20's and put all symptoms down to those problems and therefore it never occured to me that something else was working it's evil onme - that being MS.

After I recieved the dx in Jan '05 at the age of 33 it all then started to click as I was told by the consultant "judging by the MRI; you've had this a long time".

I too had glandular fever at age 17/18 & as my spleen was enlarged I was hospitalised for 6 weeks. I don't think I ever made a full recovery (had what would now be called CFS for 2 or 3 years) & for that reason, I am not sure when the MS started. I would think about 3 years after the GF but it was a further 33years till I was diagnosed. Prior to diagnosis, I had vague symptoms which came & went & I dismissed. After the birth of my 2nd child (21 years after the glandular fever) I realised that something was VERY wrong with me but it took another (I think) 15years before i was diagnosed as my then GP failed to recognose that I really was ill. Thank heavens I moved house & changed GPs!! When I was diagnosed I was told that I had probably had MS for "at least 12 years, perhaps longer."

I had glandular fever at 14, but after that had a series of weird and wonderful health issues, including a so-called 'slipped disc' at 20, which gave me weakness down my legs, and at about 27 sero-negative arthritis in my feet and later my knees. None of these things really disappeared, they would just fade away, and then reassert themselves - sometimes with real vigour! I don't think I was altogether wrongly disagnosed - especially with the arthritis - but I do think that the glandular fever may have made a difference to my whole immune system, causing 'auto-immune trouble' from that point on! My MS dx came at 40. My arthritis Dr, who I saw 6 months after ms diagnosis said he could find no evidence of any arthritis in my system whatsoever - but my knees are still stiff, could I have had ms longer? Who knows?

Hi Guys,

I used to live in Edinburgh. A lot of fun was had. We used to drink out of cans. Judy got glandular fever. I reckon I might have caught the virus from her or where she got it from.

A few years later, I was told by another friend still living in Edinburgh that one of that crowd, Judy, had been diagnosed with MS. No one knew any thing about MS.

My first relapse was twelve years ago. Transverse myelitis. Five years later, I developed optic neuritis. And then I was diagnosed with this condition.

Yes, it is being researched right now Claire. There is a suspicion it might be implicated in people going on to develop MS.

I too have just come across this poll and I am amazed at the findings. I'm in the top answer (15 to 19) in Part 1 and second most popular answer (15 to 19 years after) in Part 2.

Looks like there might be some thing in this. I will be watching with interest.

never had glandular fever - the only 'childhood' disease I had was chicken pox when I was about 10 ish. Diagnosed with MS when I was 30.

No replies in Part 1, except if you want to say that you had symptoms and blood test results that seemed to indicate you had glandular fever twice even though it's not supposed to be technically possible. In which case, please let us know at what two ages you had glandular fever and what made your doctor think you were having glandular fever a 2nd time.   Having answered the above, please continue to Part 2 http://ms-people.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=4279 to let us know at what age your onset of MS developed. You can then discuss in Part 2 if you think there's a connection between your glandular fever and MS.
