You're right, Derby, there are a lot out there.

A couple of considerations for you:-

  1. Do you have any computer expertise in the house. Someone who could resolve minor issues and computer-related problems. Basically, would you need after-sales support? If the answer is yes you might need after sales support, then you need to look local e.g. PC World, Currys etc.
  2. You do need your son to tell you what he plans to do with it. You would like it for his studies, but is that his intention? It's not so much a question of what do you want, but what are you going to be doing with it.

Having got over those two initial considerations, is it a laptop or a tablet that is required? Mobile phones can do as much as tablets these days.

Having a bit more information would be useful, as you can pick up a tablet PC for under £100 these days. Laptops really start around £2-300.

The only advice I have is don't buy one of those google net book thingies. I bought one for my daughter for Xmas last year and I struggle to get my head around it. I bought it because it was a good price, but if anything goes wrong, I don't have a clue. Give me windows or my iPad anytime lol x

All depends if he wants a Tablet or a laptop ?

You will find some good deals going for the likes of HP Pavilion laptops "nice machines "

there is also what you call (laptop - tablet -hybrid ) , you can use it as a laptop or take the screen

of to use as tablet , ive been looking at getting the Acer Aspire P3 or Acer Aspire R7 , they

look very nice .

My wife very kindly bought me a HP Pavillion laptop with a touch screen and lots of jazzy stuff.......most of which I don't understand! My mate who is an IT hardware consultant said it was very good.

Pretty sure a 10 year old would be able to work out all of the functions easily!

Wasn't cheap though.

That's of no help to your enquiry really.................sorry
