Uncomfortable Feeling

You know that feeling, the one where you think perhaps a trip to the loo is probably wise, certainly in the next few minutes or so.

But of course it is just a feeling, there is no point in making the trip as it would be, as they say, unproductive.

I've had that for a few days now.

Everything seems to be in order and in the words of the late Brian Hanrahan,

'I counted them all out, and I counted them all back'

It might have coincided with starting a new drug. They all seem to list both extremes as a potential side effect, so it is not really too helpful.

The pain is I just seemed to have got all that in order and now it is all over the place again.

Isn't this MS lark fun.

Yep Know the feeling!

Urine retention is something to be very much aware of and also worth getting checked out. They will do an ultrasound to see just how much the retention is. Yes MS is indeed such fun! I have this problem to an increasing degree but so far have avoid the (dreaded) Catheter. All I can say is drink lots of fluids all the time to avoid the chances of a UTI. I'm sure somebody else will have some additional hints.

Hi Nick,

Not talking about urine. :wink2:

But that is not great either.

I do have something that will help but if I up the dose to make it more effective, it all gets unpleasant.

I hate this every time you try some new medication, trying to figure out what is causing what.

Hello Paul,

Have bladder problems and the means to rectify it.

Constipation is a real bugbear eh? Yesterday I tried several times, as you say, unproductive, but the feeling persisted until, having a bad night with little or no sleep, the feeling became productive in the early hours.

Have remedies, but as you say, not at all pleasant, but sometimes, needs must! Something that may help is Fybrogel, it s a sachet that makes a drink which you have to drink before it sets! Not a laxative, but just something to regulate the system, I'm not sure it's a drug as such, so won't interfere with anything else. Check it out, and maybe talk to the GP next time?

Hi Paul,

I also suffer with that problem. I would say I am only 'regular' about 4-5 days of each month.

I can go maybe 5 days without any movement and you don't feel so great by then!

The Fybrogel sachets Scully mentions are good and just contain a rusk which is high in fibre. Just make sure you stir them well and drink it quickly or it turns into a gritty jelly! :yuck: Another thing is linseed. I personally eat them straight of the spoon, two desert spoonfulls every morning but if you don't like that idea then you can put it on your cereal?

If it is the new drug you're on then you could do with finding something 'natural' that you can take on a regular basis to combat the problem long term.

Good luck :-)

Hi Ladies,

I have Movicol, which I take two off each day. That keeps things in balance.

Since starting on Amantadine that does not seem to be enough. I know from experience that 3 sachets a day is not nice.

Hopefully it is just temporary while the body adjusts.

If not then I may be forced to stop the Amantadine and look for another option.

Early days yet though.

It is such a guessing game trying to keep it all in balance and feel as well as you can.

One you get going, you have got to make sure you keep going. Kids talk poo all the time, Then you grow up and don't even think of poo. None of us when younger would of ever thought we would discuss poo to strangers.

I think it is so important to get as much help or use as many ways as possible to keep going. I have gastric reflux and it is often worse when I am constipated. also you start to feel more tired and sluggish. Not surprising holding toxins in really. So far for me fybrogel helps. I suppose I should take it every day, but I don't I wait until desperate then have to take a few.

So glad in this day and age we can talk about anything.

I think that is the main point of this forum, we are all in it together, as Dave is so keen on saying.

We all know what is going on underneath, the symptoms that people don't see.

It is easy to discuss with a group who you know are going through the same, or similar.

I think it is down the Amantadine I am taking. I have been having a scout round the globe to see what others are saying and it does look like it is the guilty party.

Do you think the side effects are a temporary thing that will pass? Or is it back to the docs to see if there is anything else. Modafinil perhaps?

Hi Scully,

Who knows?

My feeling is it won't pass. I'm getting no benefit, I can't even cycle at the moment.

I'll come off, see if things go back to "normal" and then Modafinil was next on my list.

Good job I'm in for the long haul.

    • Clinically stable but feeling rubbish

My RRMS is ‘clinically stable’ apparently – why do I feel so bloody crap then…!?  No new symptoms, just the old ones making me feel rubbish. But seemingly that’s ok because there’s nothing they can do about them now as the damage is already done.  Wasn’t told how important it was to go on DMD’s when I first had symptoms, Neurologist now says I’m not eligible until I have 2 new relapses within 2 years – but what about damage being done behind the scenes so to speak?

    • feeling oversensitive

I just need a virtual hug, again. not MS but it does affect it AS I have mentioned before we me and my husband are responsible for 3 elderly people. one has now gone in a home, but as you know you dont just forget about them there are still lots of things to control. Father in law who has had lots of mini strokes has been unwell this week he is also blind partially deaf and has emphysema and asthma and has had a chest infection this week, well we have been trying for over 2 months to have him assessed by social services. Well because a doctor had to be called out at the beginning of the week they got crisis care in. and a daily nurse . Well the nurse this morning, phoned me because hubby was at work , I felt she was having a go. she says He has had nothing to eat or drink , he has not took his inhaler or meds , he is sat here incapable.   Well my husband went round last night and said you wont get a carer in the morning can you manage your meds and your porridge and I will see you at lunchtime when I finish work, yes he said, hubby got the jug out that he uses for his porridge and all was well.   They rang me yesterday and told me his clothes and underclothes have not been changed for a while, so yesterdays carer got out clean clothes for him. He didnt put them on though. A week back I arranged daily dinners for him (private meals on wheels) He told me to cancel them. They wanted him to go to day care at a place for blind people ... he refused, he wont have a key lock safe even though he doesnt hear the phone or door sometimes. He has now accepted that carers can come in. The other day though she phoned me and said he wont let her do anything for him and so she took the guide dog for a walk. That is another job we have to do. We have been getting him wiltshire farm foods for a long time and he was managing to microwave them.   The other day the nurse who rang me said he does seem capable of doing these things,, this one this morning said he is not able to use his inhaler unsupervised, I told her I know nothing about inhalers anyway. My husband has changed in the last few months and is even less tolerant about any little MS moans I have. My mother is 91and I get her online shopping read her post take her out and do her laundry. My hubby is working full time and also has CKD even though its manageable all this does him no good either. Moan over I feel better now I have ranted... thankyou, I know ou cannot do anything. I just felt a bit upset that the nurse seemed to think we had neglected him this morning, I took it personally I often feel like running away.
